Picture
First inspired by the landscape of her native New Zealand, Kay hopes to capture some of the visual and spiritual beauty of the natural world in her painting. She has a vivid memory of her first subject, a blackbird, drawn when she was six years old. She spent her childhood in rural New Zealand enjoying the freedom to explore the great outdoors. Later when she was raising her two children she was a keen member of the local art society which held very successful annual exhibitions.

Having painted for most of her life Kay is mainly self-taught. However, she has attended many art workshops, including a year of full-time study at Aoraki Polytechnic School of Art. Although she paints landscapes and still lifes, Kay has recently developed her interest in portraiture. Her contemporary style favours a loose representation influenced by such painters as Monet, Cassatt and Cezanne. A wish to see the masters’ original works lured Kay to the galleries of Europe and the UK in 2006.

Exhibitions since arriving in Oxford ten years ago include:
  • Oxford Central Library
  • The Jam Factory
  • Linacre College
  • The Art Café
  • Bottega Wine bar
  • Worton Park
  • and Oxfordshire Artweeks.

Kay has a Partner membership with prodigious author Dennis Hamley.
Her art can also be seen on Painters-Online kayoj.

Faces are fascinating to me and they often reveal much about a person's life. I particularly enjoy the challenge of capturing not just a likeness but something of the subject's character, and I prefer painting happy people! Not to say that seriousness doesn't have it's place but a warm smile seems to be contagious. All these example portraits are watercolours, approx 10 x 8 ins.
The Skye paintings are in mixed media, including luminous pastels which create a mysterious light reminiscent of this magical western Isle off Scotland, whereas the acrylic Pacific paintings have a crisp, clean atmosphere and a feeling of relaxed calm. All the examples shown are approx 15 x 16 ins.

We would love to hear from you
